QATAR RUGBY HISTORY
HISTORY
Rugby’s history dates back to 1823 and was traditionally popular amongst the Western and European nations. However, Rugby did not make a hit in Doha until 1974 when some British expats started throwing a ball around on a sandy pitch West Bay. It wasn’t long after that they formed the first known Rugby club the ‘Qatar Rugby Union Football’ which was part of the original formation of the Arabian Gulf Rugby Football Union formed in 1977.
The AGRF joined the IRB in 1977 and in that same year the Qatar Rugby Union Football changed its name and relocated grounds to what we call nowadays, the Doha Rugby Football Club. The Commonwealth expatriates working in the oil industry and military continued to play and Rugby slowly started to blossom and in 1998 the first grassed pitched was laid at the Rugby Club and in 2010 the ARGFU was divvied into Unions.
In 1974 the first established rugby union club in Doha was named Qatar Rugby Union Football Club. Soon afterwards the AGFRU was formed of which Qatar Football club was a founding member. The first endorsed Qatar National Rugby team was in created in March 2006 to compete in the G.C.C. trai-nations sevens tournament in Dubai. Qatar sent two teams for their maiden representative tour and was fiercely competitive
