Asia Rugby is delighted to announce the appointment of a new Asia Rugby CEO, Mr Johny Stavrinou. Johny is the founder and previous President of Cyprus Rugby and has previously served as CEO / Commercial Manager of a number of international companies.
“We are fortunate to have someone of Mr Johny Stavrinou’s calibre and experience step up to lead the executive scene of Asia Rugby,” said Asia Rugby President Qais Al Dhalai, announcing the appointment of the new Asia Rugby CEO.
“We are at a critical moment and require a renewed leadership to successfully implement our strategic and action planning to take advantage of the massive opportunity created by the momentum of Japan successfully hosting the first Rugby World Cup in Asia, and leading up to Japan hosting the Summer Olympics ahead”
he added. “Johny has a proven track record, and with the support of Asia Rugby executive committee and fraternity we are looking forward to a new era for Asia Rugby under my three principles of Equality, Transparency and Accountability” said Asia Rugby President.
The overall key areas that the new CEO will have the responsibility to deliver in include, but are not limited to: Budgeting and Commercial operations; Governance and Compliance of member Unions Competitions across the Region; and, Development of the Game.
A high-powered CEO selection committee was set up by Al Dhalai to find the key person based on the three principles above-mentioned.
The committee consisted of the Asia Rugby President; two Asia Rugby Vice Presidents, Mr Fawzi Khawaja and Mr Vela Tan; Asia Rugby Representative to the World Rugby Council Mr Terence Khoo; and, Mr Ridzal Saat World Rugby Services Manager Asia.
“I would like to thank all the applicants, especially the five short-listed candidates who took time out to meet us in person in Dubai on 14-2-2020; I would also like to thank the Committee for their honesty, advice and due diligence on this important practice throughout the selection process.
“Johny shall be based in Dubai and commences work with us in mid-March 2020. I know that all Asia Rugby member unions shall all give Johny full support in his new role at this exciting period for Asia Rugby,” concluded al Dhalai.
