Malaysia U19 recorded a dramatic 15-14 victory over the UAE to lift the men’s Division II title.
Following a 14-14 draw in the first leg the two sides played out a second thrilling encounter with the hosts edging a 29-28 victory on aggregate.
Ahmad Azizad gave Malaysia the lead but the UAE hit back with a penalty from Justin Brits.
Azizad added his second of the match to extend their lead to 15-3. Baptiste Requillart scored UAE’s first try of the match but Muhamad Sudin kicked a penalty for Malaysia to continue putting distance between themselves and their opponents.
Brits added his second penalty to leave the scores at 15-11 at half-time and despite Alistair Hess adding UAE’s third penalty midway through the second half, Malaysia’s defence held out to clinch the victory.
It was an historic victory for Malaysia and shows the development of the sport in their country paying dividends.
