Sri Lanka Rugby Union (SLRU) is committed to growing Rugby and is conducting a series of World Rugby Training & Education (T&E) programs targeting all provinces across the country.
This follows a very successful mass participation and awareness drive that saw the SLRU conduct Get into Rugby Festivals across the island. In 26 days they covered 25 districts a total of 5,414 participants of which, 2,468 participants were female.

There is a growing demand for qualified Coaches and Match officials to cope with the sharp increase in number of players, and the SLRU is focusing its attention on T&E as part of the program.
In June 2019, 26 participants took part in the World Rugby L1 Match Official and Coaching course in Kuranagala district in North Western Province, & the program moved on to Avissawella, in Sabaragamuwa Province where the SLRU trained 9 more participants in coaching and 12 participants in officiating, 11 of the participants are physical training instructors.

Prior to each T&E session, the SLRU also helping participants prepare using the “World Rugby Passport” (World Rugby’s online portal which helps them get updated in pre requisites for the Level 1 Course).
World Rugby Passport is a gateway to the training and education web sites provided by World Rugby. Registering for a World Rugby Passport gives access to online education and certification on a range of topics from Laws of the Game, Antidoping to Coaching & physical preparation for Rugby.
The SLRU is planning to add Strength and Conditioning (S&C) and
First Aid in Rugby (FAIR) – Medical course) to the courses offered across the country, and will do so as part of the World Rugby / Asia Rugby T&E Superweek which the SLRU will host in Colombo in mid August 2019.

With the huge drive to grow the Game across the various facets of Development, Mass Participation, Female inclusion and Training & Education, the SLRU is in a strong position to take the Game to the next level
