This year marks the fifth year that Malaysia Rugby Union has been involved with the Get Into Rugby program with World Rugby and Asia Rugby.
has reached almost 130,000 school children in the four years the program has been running in Malaysia.
Malaysia Rugby Get Into Rugby Program
The program which has 3 stages,
- TRY for introductory level (non-contact)
- PLAY for skills development (contact level)
- STAY for retaining of players in the game
it has been in huge demand in schools around Malaysia.
Recently the Malaysia Rugby union GIR program Director Raimi Yusof organised a Get into Rugby workshop and conference with their GIR Regional District Officers after the huge success in 2018 to achieve 52,000 participants.
The success was thanks to the effort of the RDOs and teachers who adopted the programs in their districts and schools.
The biggest challenge was planning and consolidating the resources to cover the whole of Malaysia, but the passion of teachers in the sports have proven to be useful in growing the game bigger in Malaysia.
The focus of the workshop was to evaluate the union’s performance in promoting the game and share ideas and shortcomings in achieving the goals.
With huge numbers of school children taking to the sport, the task is to make sure that the program empowers the teachers, trainers and coaches with a proper and structured set of skills.
The program has left many positive impacts towards the teachers and students and using the five core values in rugby, teachers are able to see great changes in students. The program provides character building, self-confidence, team skills and physical development.
